What Is Best Treatment For Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux disease (GERD) is a medical condition wherein the esophagus becomes inflamed or irritated because of the backing up of acids from the stomach. Acid reflux disease treatment can be done in several methods.

Most often, physicians are suggesting rubric modifications of lifestyles when they recommend non-pharmaceutical GERD treatments for their patients. However, most dietary involvements are anecdotal. Only the head bed's elevation and weight loss were supported by some evidences.

It is also beneficial to eat smaller meals instead of large meals. Other types of food to be avoided include peppermint, chocolate, spicy foods, cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, onions, Brussels sprouts, spinach, broccoli, and cauliflower), acidic foods (tomatoes and oranges, good if eaten fresh), and milk, as well as milk related products containing fat and calcium.

Positional Therapy

This acid reflux disease treatment focuses on the implementation of head bed positioning. Implementing a pharmacologic therapy combined with avoiding restricted foods before bedtime plus proper head bed elevation can give a patient a feeling of complete relief. In incomplete relief cases, further conservative measures are adopted to optimize response to the treatment.

Head bed elevation is accomplished through using blocks or other items such as wooden or plastic bed risers that support bed legs or posts, a bed wedged-pillow, or an inflatable lifter mattress which can fit in between the box spring and the mattress. Keep in mind that the elevation's height is critical. The required minimum height is 15-20 centimeters (6-8 inches) to hinder gastric fluids backflow effectively. Some patients are even claiming that utilizing more than 6-8 inches blocks is more effective.

Drug Treatment

Acid reflux disease treatment through the use of various drugs is effective. Some medication forms are most often recommended in many Western countries. These drugs can be utilized in combination with other medications.

- Proton pump inhibitors. Reduce secretion of gastric acids most effectively by stopping the acid production source.

- Antacids. Increase the level of pH and lessen gastric acidity. Effective if taken before meals and after the symptoms start.

- Alginic acid or Gaviscon. Coats the mucosa, decrease reflux, and increase the levels of pH. The meta-analysis of controlled randomized trials shows that Alginic acid is one of the most efficient non-prescription treatments.

- H2 receptor gastric blockers (famotidine or ranitidine). Reduce secretion of gastric acid. These medications are antihistamines which also relieve complaints to almost 50 percent of patients having GERD.

- Prokinetics. Speed up emptying the stomach and support the LES.

- Sucralfate. Helps in healing and preventing esophageal damages. Taking this drug for several times a day with two hours interval from medication and meals is also effective.

Surgical Treatment

Acid reflux disease treatment can be also done through a surgery. This treatment is applicable if all the above mentioned forms of medications failed. The Nissen fundoplication is performed laparoscopically by wrapping the stomach's upper part on the LES for strengthening the sphincter, preventing acid reflux, and repairing hiatal hernia.

One out of every two people in the United States has some type of disability that limits their daily living. The disability could be from a stroke, a fall, or another age-related difficulty. With approximately 70 million people in this age category, it presents a large segment of the population.

Ergonomics and How it Can Help You in the Office Environment

Precisely, what is ergonomics, and how does it affect how you work?

Wikipedia says: 'Ergonomics is the science of organising the task, equipment, and workspace to fit the employee. Good ergonomic design is necessary to prevent repetitive strain injuries, which can develop over time and can lead to long-term disability and symptoms.'

So, on the face of it that sounds relatively simple does it not? Well let's break it down into bite sized chunks.

Equipment organisation

Workspace.

Read notes on DSE assessment, taking note of recommendations. Site workstation in suitably lit area. Assemble the workstation.

First of all we need to define the task. We'll take Joe, 29, our imaginary CAD designer as an example. Joe is 6'5" tall weighs a healthy 14.5 stones and has some intermittent lower back pains not helped at all with his passion for rowing and sailing and not forgetting 8 hours a day at his workstation tapping away for Queen and country. Joe hopes to sail around the World in 2012 as part of the Clipper Round the World Race, but is procrastinating over a golfers elbow injury he picked up on a sailing course in the Solent near Southampton.

Joe uses AutoCAD software and Microsoft office suite to perform his daily tasks, like emailing, spreadsheets and word documents. He has hard copy drawings for reference and the usual office paraphernalia like phones and stationery trays.

Joe was asked to sit at an office chair on a workstation in the corner, a little out of the way but it was used by the guy that left last week and looked okay. Joe sat at the office desk, but couldn't get his knees under the desk top, so he adjusted the gas to its lowest setting. The chair arms were a D shape and he couldn't get near enough to the desk to use the keyboard without stooping, exacerbated by the monitor positioned low on the desk. With his legs stretched out in front of him, Joe was almost doubled over; in the same position he was in just last Sunday morning ready to make the first pull on the oar. The edge of the seat was somewhere in the middle of his thigh. Every now and again Joe had to take a little walk, stretch, and rest his eyes. Not a bad thing you might say, that's right, only Joe was having to take breaks every 15 minutes or so.

He'd noticed of late his elbow had been quite inflamed and particularly his right wrist. It was when he was rubbing his elbow in the tea room that Josie from occupational health saw him massaging his funny bone.

Luckily for our hero, Josie the Occupational Health nurse was quite clued up on funny bones and other extraneous body parts - but we won't go into that right now, suffice to say Joe was sequestered back to his workstation for a good going over.

After assessing Joes' tasks, Josie measured him up and instantly suggested desk raisers, a new multi-adjustable, high back, high stem ergonomic chair with a lumbar pump. Into the bargain Josie suggested mouse and keyboard gel pads.

Joe's workspace was nice and bright, excellent for reading small detail on drawings but not so good when using a computer monitor. After some gentle questioning, Josie - and we should know her by now - recommended moving the desk so the light was out of Joes sight line, and an eye test, as our hero had been suffering a nagging eyestrain and the odd headache of late.

Josie filled out the assessment forms and 48 hours later Joes' new ergonomic gear arrived. Josie came over and along with the installer set out Joe's new workstation and demonstrated the multi function chair.

Joe is now a happy bunny and spends many an hours adjusting his lumbar and relieving pressure on his coccyx, whilst Josie is the proud recipient of a box of roses chocolates.

I'd like to say that Joe asked Josie out, but Joe is a little shy when it comes to the ladies.

Do the math. On a typical work week, you could be spending up to a fourth of your life in your office chair. If you go home aching every day, you owe it to your long-term health and well-being to fix the problem. Sometimes this means trading in your old office chair for a new ergonomic model - but very often, making a few quick adjustments can take care of the issue.

Do you have hip or thigh pain? Most desks are built one-size-fits-all, and a surprising number of office chairs are adjusted to fit desks instead of to a worker's body. Try rolling away from your desk and adjusting your chair's height so that your legs naturally fall into a right angle. If your back hurts, it's usually due to a lack of lumbar support. Many office chairs are manufactured following a straight line - but the human spine has a natural curvature that needs to be supported. If your chair has an adjustable lumbar support, make sure it fits into the center of your back's curvature, set it, and check it frequently. Too often, the support gets pushed too low or too high.
